Dyscalculia
Dyscalculia Symptoms & Consequences
As many as 7% of elementary school students are affected with dyscalculia, a brain-related condition that presents learning difficulties for even basic math. It’s as common as dyslexia, and the two are similar in that they are learning & processing disorders – dyslexia for reading, dyscalculia for math. Dyscalculia is lesser known, although the old phrase “math anxiety” might have been (mis)applied in many dyscalculia cases.
Students who have disabilities in mathematics or students who perform poorly in math seldom get a recommendation for an evaluation. They are told they are just not good at math. The effects of math failure coupled with math illiteracy in adult life can seriously harm daily living and vocational choices. One would face a variety of challenges, from balancing a personal budget to working in any field from science to technology to finance. This means that addressing the symptoms of dyscalculia early on is important, so that your child does not fall far behind in his or her educational advancement.
