Amidst the ongoing global health crisis of COVID-19, our team at Mind Over Learning wants to extend our support and services to as many families as possible during these uncertain times.
We recognize that education is a core aspect of child development, and prolonged school closures can create added pressure at home and an increased sense of unease about how to help your child grow in their knowledge of foundational skills for later in life, such as reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Learning apps, both free and paid versions, can provide children with a powerful and engaging educational activity. However, as many parents have found, these apps are largely beneficial as a supplementary tool, and not a replacement to personalized education.
Mind Over Learning’s approach is highly tailored to each student’s unique needs and learning style, creating an atmosphere of high engagement and long-term understanding of any academic subject.
Limitations of Using Just a Learning App
When using a learning app as a student’s primary means of education, the following key components of long-term understanding are missed:
- The app does not assess processes or understanding of the concepts presented
- The app cannot teach the student to learn self-correction strategies for foundational or advanced concepts and ideas
- The app does not give accurate, personally-tailored feedback to each individual activity
What Sets Us Apart
Our instructors are experts in keeping children of all ages engaged, even through a screen. The students who are currently receiving our services have had and continue to have great academic success with our virtual approach.
- We use highly interactive and engaging learning techniques which keep students engaged in the right learning processes.
- We set the correct pace based on the student’s physical, mental, and emotional needs in the moment.
After 16 years of successfully supporting students with severe language or math disabilities, Mind Over Learning has grown to specialize in learning disabilities unparalleled to any other type of remediation.
Based on the foundations of the Orton-Gillingham model of teaching, the scope of our approach has widened by developing effective programs for students who are diagnosed with, or exhibit symptoms of:
- Dyslexia
- Dyscalculia
- Dysgraphia / Dyspraxia / Developmental Coordination Disorder
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- ADHD
- NVLD
- FASD
- Language Processing Disorder (written and verbal)
- Auditory Processing / Visual Processing Disorder
- Executive Function Deficits
- Sensory Processing Disorder
- Mild to moderate behaviour disorders
Ensuring Mastery and Developing Learning Skills as a Team
Mind Over Learning develops a student’s weak learning skills by building on their strongest ones. Although apps build on core concepts, our team focuses primarily on whole-brain learning to ensure long-term mastery of subjects. Through our programs, students develop learning skills and strategies such as:
- Organized thought
- Saliency
- Memorization
- Strategic processing
- Comprehensive output of ideas
- Understanding of facts, techniques, and concepts as a whole
Our instructors are professionally trained in emotional and behavior science. We build rapport with students and address their learning needs through our understanding of past experiences and study, and provide emotional support and guidance as students feel anxiety about a subject, topic, or concept.
Additionally, students are promoted through levels of our program only once mastery of a particular subject has been achieved. A student’s mastery is directly linked to their self-efficacy and the belief that they are competent to complete a task successfully. Students are provided with additional practice and exercises as necessary for review of challenging topics. There is no replacement for a real person who is interested, knowledgeable, and compassionate, working one-on-one and face-to-face.
Our teaching approach is individualized to the student’s strongest intake and output learning styles.
Utilizing the Positive Aspects of Apps in Our Sessions
We understand the benefits of these learning apps, and we’ve heard firsthand, both from our own families as well as our existing clients, that kids love them. These apps are engaging, full of attainable and tangible goals, and fun. Whether you or your family have used many apps, have a favorite one, or have chosen not to use them at all, it’s impossible to deny how much more kids love to learn if they are both engaged and having fun.
A Harvard article highlights a study in which the researcher found that happiness is directly related to a student’s desire to learn. Mind Over Learning’s specialized approach emphasizes the importance of engaging the student and creating a safe learning environment.
All of our sessions are structured with attainable goals taught through errorless learning, providing students with practical, tangible skills for all areas of life.
Our Solution – Virtual Learning
We believe that all students can learn any subject when provided with a safe learning environment, an opportunity to fully engage, and a teaching approach that is presented the way the student understands.
At Mind Over Learning, we do more than just teach. We develop academic understanding and competence so that students can develop self-confidence.
Our commitment can be seen in our understanding of each student’s neuro-psychological process, our interactions with the student, our teaching approach, our safe learning environment, our individualized program plan for each student, our communication with parents, our communication within the team, and our continuous research in scientific developments in learning so students can achieve more than expected.
Our passion for education and helping families touches all our staff and can be felt by parents and students. It gives us a sense of responsibility to our students, making sure their challenges no longer limit them. We are committed to providing the best opportunity possible to every single student.
