People with Non-Verbal Learning Disability (NVLD) often struggle both academically and socially.
Mind Over Learning understands the roots of NVLD and all the brain functions affected by it (neurodevelopmentally).
Commonly undiagnosed on its own, NVLD is a type of learning disability with problems processing information in open space. It can also be found with ADHD and Autism, but not always.
NVLD results in challenges with written expression due to difficulties with abstract reasoning. It comes with significant difficulty in math and learning math facts, as well as understanding the abstract concepts in math. Students with NVLD generally think in concrete terms. A person with NVLD may find difficulty comprehending, explaining, and understanding abstract processes.
What are Common Signs of NVLD?
People with NVLD may display difficulties with some of the following:
- Fine motor skills
- Changes in routine
- Organization and planning ahead
- Reading social cues
- Processing information, even after asking many questions (or the same one more than once)
- Spatial awareness (generally clumsy and may feel “in the way” of people and things often)
- Comprehending complex instructions
- Identifying the main idea
People with NVLD may display strengths with some of the following:
- Thrives with structure
- Effective verbal reasoning
- Expansive vocabulary
- Rote memory recall and learning skills
- Factual recall of numbers or math equations
- Factual recall of concrete details from a story
One of the challenges of NVLD is that it gives an “illusion of competence” – making the student look like he or she is doing fine because of his or her advanced verbal skills. These students could be deeply struggling with academics and other issues.
Students with NVLD often create short-term strategies to compensate for areas of difficulty in their learning, and may become frustrated when these do not work with increasingly advanced concepts.
The good news is that there are effective strategies available for coping with NVLD and creating a more functional life, both day-to-day and in the long term. Our instructors are experts in understanding NVLD and how to create a unique teaching approach to build confidence and achieve academic success, while fitting the person’s individual needs.
We are professionally trained in emotional and behavior science. We build rapport with students and address their learning needs through our understanding of past experiences and study, and provide emotional support and guidance as students feel anxiety about a subject, topic, or concept.
Our math and language programs are specifically designed for these students, with or without a specific diagnosis. Our approach is highly successful.
